Tips to Enjoying Budget Travel

Posted by admin on August 15th, 2008

Budget travel is a great way to see the world, you will most likely be on foot and will see more of the place you are visiting than you would from the back of a taxi. Budget travel also puts you closer to the local culture; you come away having experienced rather than merely glimpsing a different a way of life. If this sounds like a great way to spend your holiday then budget travel is right up your alley. There are a few things you can learn that will make traveling on a budget much easier for you.

Timing

If you’ve decided last minute that you want to go on holiday, chances are that most flights will be fully booked and there are no rooms left. However there are always ways round this. If you want to travel around the holidays then there will be certain days when flights will be emptier, this means traveling on Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Years Eve and New Years Day. If you can travel on these days you have a better chance of getting a place on a flight.

It is however best to travel off season, find out when peak season is in your destination and avoid it like the plague. Not only will things be cheaper but you have the advantage of everything being much emptier and a better chance of enjoying the scenery without the crowds. Also make sure that you choose a travel company that has daily flights rather than weekly ones, these companies will have much better rates.

Getting Through Bus and Train Journeys

A large part of budget travel involves taking less than comfortable transport. Instead of a plane you may have to take a bus or train, it is often much cheaper to opt for a bus or train. Another advantage of traveling by land is that you will be enjoy the scenery in a way that you wouldn’t in a plane. The downside to traveling on a bus or train is that it can be uncomfortable, especially if you are in a developing country where the roads are filled with pot holes and it’s sometimes a stretch to call the dirt track you’re on a road.

In such situations you should bring earplugs or headphones, something to cut out the noise so you can catch a few minutes of sleep or just to get away from the noise of the vehicle. It’s also important to choose a good seat, if you can choose your seat in advance you should choose one in the front. There is more leg room and the bumps in the road won’t be felt as badly as they would at the back of the bus. Budget travel means that you might have to journey at night, if you do travel at night it will be quieter and you will save on a one night’s accommodation.
